Born in Poland and raised in Romania, Andrei Cădere moved to France in 1967, making himself known as André Cadere. In his youth years, he flirted with abstract painting while modeling for painters of the Communist regime such as Corneliu Baba. Once established in Paris, he starts his series of "barres de bois", round wooden bars with stripes that will earn him comparisons with Daniel Buren. Not much unlike Buren, Cadere's bars could function as "infinite paintings", sculptures or subjects of happenings. Even in day-to-day situations, Cadere would always carry such a bar with him, earning him the nickname "The Stick Man". He died in Paris from cancer. undefined
