Born in San Francisco, California Lives and works in New York Angelina Gualdoni begins her paintings by pouring directly onto the canvas, creating a capricious and unpredictable ground. She then paints over top to flush out naturally occurring forms and voids. Structures build on the outlines and interiors of stains, which leap out against watery backgrounds. She augments passages using geometric patterns that weave through the picture plane, demarcating objects, and suggesting pattern as both structure and adornment. Her work is permeated by an intense interest in tensions of emptiness and being, the ephemerality of light, space, and the passage of time.
