"My still life paintings aim to explore how the inanimate objects surrounding us in our everyday lives hold many kinds of meanings. I continue to be interested in issues surrounding the nature of memory and residual traces. For example the images in the Dark Series try to deal in various ways with mortality and childhood memories, particularly following the death of my father.
Literature often feeds into my work, as do the historical traditions of Western still life painting, in particular Dutch and Spanish 17th-century art, the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, and the work of artists such as Sanchez Cotan, William Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Frida Kahlo, and Euan Uglow. I always work from life and usually precede painting with sketches and drawings, alongside other techniques and media.
My recent seascapes reflect my love of Cornwall, which I have visited all my life. I hope they show my personal feeling for the coast, sea and saturating light of this magical area." http://www.annadoughertypaintings.co.uk/index.htm undefined
