Anupam Sud was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, in 1944. She received her diploma in Fine Arts from the College of Art, New Delhi, in 1967 with a specialization in printmaking. She continued to study printmaking at the Slade School of Art, London (1971-72)on a British Council scholarship. Mentored by Somnath Hore, he helped her find her own individuality.
Regarded as one of the finest intaglio printmakers of her generation, Anupam’s themes focus on a feminism that enlarges into a concern for the human predicament per se. Realized metaphorically rather than directly, what sets Anupam apart is her effortless infusion of different intaglio processes with screen-printing and lithography.
Her zinc plates breathe with life, suggesting the contours of sculpture, while hinting at the warmth of oils. Enjoying the feel of using watercolors, Anupam has recently also taken up painting in acrylic.
As one of the founder members of GROUP 8 (1968), Anupam, along with her printmaker colleagues, worked to promote and sustain printmaking as an independent, expressive art form.
