Boris Kulikov graduated from The Institute of Theatre, Music And Cinema in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 1997 he lives and works as an illustrator in Brooklyn, NY. Artist's Statement "My theatrical background played a major role in my career as an illustrator. Working on a book project for me is similar to working on a play or shooting a movie. The only difference is that I’m a director, artist, and actor in one, and I work with two dimensions instead of three. Artists who influenced me include Felix Sherman, Sergey Barkhin, Peter Konnikov, and Renaissance artists. The original artwork highlighted in this exhibition is from my children’s books, Papa’s Mechanical Fish, Barnum’s Bones, Franklin’s Big Dreams, Sandy’s Circus, and others. Original editorial work featured in the The New York Times Book Review is also on display. Most of my illustrations are done in two parts. One is my traditional painting and the other is kind of a collage made of my own pictures. Graphite pencil and colored pencils images were done separately, scanned, printed, cut out, and glued on exact spaces of paintings." Boris Kulikov’s Fartiste and Sandy’s Circus were named among the 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing by New York Public Library. His The Castle on Hester Street was awarded the Sydney Taylor Honor in 2008. His books have also been recognized as books of the year by School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Child, and Time. He graduated from the Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinema in St. Petersburg.
