ID photo: Self Portrait by Chris Lebeau, 1933.
Joris Johannes Christiaan (Chris) Lebeau (Amsterdam, May 26 1878 - Dachau concentration camp, April 2 1945); Dutch designer, painter and anarchist.
... a versatile artist; he created linen designs, glass designs, painted ceramics and designed pottery. Beside designing wallpaper, he was also engaged in batik, painting, drawing, making bookplates and designing book covers and postage stamps, including the Flying Dove series. He also created decorations, posters and programs for Theater Verkade in the Hague. (See http://sannydezoete.nl/en/damask-table-linen/sannys-design-damask-collection/chris-lebeau-designs/ for linen designs.)
Lebeau professed his convictions with great vehemence. He called himself a religious anarcho-communist. He was a founding member in 1904 of the Dutch Association of Craft and Art Industry (VANK).
In 1933, after the National Socialists rose to power in Germany, Lebeau entered into a sham marriage with a German Jewish refugee. He also took under his wing Sixta Heddema as a student. During the occupation Lebeau and Heddema used their artistic knowledge to falsify documents. On Nov. 3, 1943 Lebeau, his wife and Heddema were arrested for helping Dutch Jews. He could have been released if he promised to refrain from illegal work, but he refused.... He died of exhaustion in Dachau. Work in his studio was protected by Heddema, who was released, and upon her death, bequeathed to the Foundation Fine Arts around 1900. Since the 70s the collection is housed at the Drents Museum in Assen.
