Clay Sinclair is a New Zealand-born artist currently based in Oxford, United Kingdom. His works combine influences from graffiti, pop art, and media forms like magazine covers and advertisements into bold, irreverent, and original images. Sinclair offers commentary and snarky criticism on contemporary pop culture and the art world itself. Perhaps most notable for his process of ‘painting backwards’ on plexiglass and perspex, he borders these non-traditional paintings with ornate frames. The compositions, dense with words, bold colors, and familiar imagery, regularly use text to create provocations within each piece, resulting in luminous, stimulating, and often humorous works. He describes his works as “provocative pop paintings on perspex, dealing with issues of power, prestige, and possessions.”
Clay Sinclair has been exclusively represented by Woolff Gallery in London since 2009, and has exhibited internationally at numerous fairs including Art Miami, Scope New York, Art Toronto, and the London Art Fair. undefined
