Artwork Title: La Lecture

La Lecture, 1908

Constant Montald

The Emile Verhaeren Museum is pleased to announce that through the Brussels gallery Eric Gillis Fine Art, a private collector has donated a significant work to the museum. The portrait of Emile Verhaeren is by Constant Montald, a famous Belgian painter of the fin de siècle. This imposing work depicts the poet at Caillou-qui-bique (Roisin) while he recites a poem and is a direct testimony of the friendship between Verhaeren and Montald. This donation is immediately a lasting memory of the 100th anniversary of the death of Emile Verhaeren in 1916. (Google translation; http://www.emileverhaeren.be/nl/nieuws/detail/nws-413-een-schenking-voor-het-verhaerenmuseum) Montald made several portraits (drawings and paintings) of Verhaeren, including this amber and peach-colored canvas, La Lecture (1908), which shows the poet leaning forward and reading.
