Margaret Stites Manning, 1770

Cosmo Alexander

"Margaret Stites Manning (1740-1815) was the wife of the first president of Brown University. Alexander arrived from Scotland around 1770 to visit colonial America. He met the young Gilbert Stuart in Newport at about the same time and instructed him in drawing. Alexander returned to Great Britain in 1772, accompanied by Stuart, after completing portraits of many Rhode Island notables." http://books0977.tumblr.com/post/132389139917/margaret-stites-manning-1770-cosmo-alexander
