As an artist and activist, David Bradley often uses art historical iconic images as stages to present Native American figures to address issues of cultural hegemony and stereotypes. The intended humorous references are strategic. Bradley is challenging the limitations placed upon Native American art to “look” Indian against the placement of Native Figures in historically important positions. In Rio Grande Madonna, the Puebloan woman wears a Navajo necklace while holding a ceremonial tableta.
