Legolas is one of the few main characters in Lord of the Rings who I haven't tackled except in the occasional drawing. Not much is said about his description in the books, so there is inevitable controversy whenever anyone takes a stab at his likeness. However, I like to think of Tolkien's lack of specificity in his descriptions is a gift to artists, and possibly the reason his books continue to be such a rich source of inspiration for us. Since Legolas is a Mirkwood Elf, I gave him coloring that would blend him in with the woodsy atmosphere of the forest, becoming one with the environment. The Autumn setting is a nostalgic nod to my childhood in Vermont.
