Dorian Hiethaar "Since 1988 Dorian Hiethaar has drawn and painted only the „favourite forest“ she knows since her childhood days. That forest does not only exist in her childhood memories but is also a real place. Years ago Hiethaar established her studio here and spends most of her time there. The studio is her base camp from which she begins her explorations of the forest. She walks the forest paths, looks at the pond, sows in her vegetable garden – living in the wood. And she paints. Her subjects range across the various sites in the forest: the pond, the vegetable patch, the wood, its paths, the scour and the observation tower. Two more motifs are recurring themes: snow and rhubarb. Hiethaar is particularly fascinated by the pieplant – going so far as to maintain a blog on the subject. In her drawings and paintings the artist documents everything that does not move of its own accord. Everything that crawls, walks or flies she has recorded on video since 1995. In fine details and a rich colour spectrum Hiethaar affords us glimpses into her world without letting on its precise location. The favourite forest of her childhood days remains a secret place.
