Artwork Title: Black Door with Snow II

Black Door with Snow II, 1955

Georgia O'Keeffe

The power of this image of Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home comes from its simplicity: spare, alternating shapes in solid yet painterly colors. It is a beautiful example of O'Keeffe's struggle in the mid 1950s, when the artist produced a series of canvases based on patios and doors, to express her thoughts on the complicated relationship between color and shape. O'Keeffe is perhaps the artist most associated with New Mexico and the desert Southwest in the 20th century; her subjects ranged from the region's distinctive adobes, majestic mountains, and expansive sky to cactus flowers and dried skulls.
