Artwork Title: Convolvulous

Convolvulous, 1940

Gluck (Hannah Gluckstein)

Lodging in Nesta’s house in East Sussex during the war, Gluck suffered a severe bout of illness, shortly after which she made this flower painting, which she considered one of her finest. Convolvulus wilt in a matter of hours, and in the five weeks of solid work it took to complete the painting, Gluck had to scour the hedgerows for replacement blooms.
