Glyn Philpot studied at Lambeth School of Art and then at the Académie Julian, Paris, in 1905. His earlier work, primarily as a portrait painter was dominated by a dark tonal range, however, in the 1930s a turning point occured in his career and his style changed from the previously academic influences to a freer use of paint and a fondness for pale color harmonies in greys, soft greens and blues.
