Artwork Title: Portraits in the Countryside

Portraits in the Countryside, 1876

Gustave Caillebotte

One woman reads while the others do embroidery. Caillebotte’s country scenes at Yerres focus on water subjects, such as pleasure boating, and domestic scenes around his country home. Often, he used a soft impressionistic technique reminiscent of Renoir to convey the tranquil nature of the countryside, in sharp contrast to the flatter, smoother strokes of his urban paintings.
