Blending observation and imagination, Han Qing continues the exploration of urban streetscapes with his unique vision. While many Chinese artists have chosen to paint works often with a pointed political commentary, Han Qing focusses on intertwining the real with the symbolic while seeking to transfer the emotional and visceral qualities of his environment onto the canvas. It is often during the night that his painterly narrative unfolds against a backdrop of urban dreamscapes reflecting blurred and existential images of modern life. Although the use of paint and brushwork evoke a traditional use of the media, the subject matter is darker, moodier - bordering on psychedelic with his distinct palette.
Han Qing’s nocturnal streetscapes - at times traced with hazy silhouettes of human figures in cars - give full expression to a universe that is both illusionary and ephemeral echoing, our transient existence in a constantly evolving environment. The blurred subjects seen from a cinematic viewpoint – from the sidewalk or directly towards oncoming traffic become oneiric illusions layered with emotional states of fragility and fleetingness. In some other works, the streets are acutely devoid of human figures heightening the feeling of desolation and the undercurrent of sensuality. The artist on a night search appears to be seeking to capture the sense of loss and loneliness associated with the profound social changes in the contemporary Chinese society of today. undefined
