"Every morning I go for a walk unless it's teeming down. When I come back I get my breakfast because I haven't had anything before I go out. Then I do shopping and maybe I'll do about 2 hours German, and then have a rest before I read the Psalms in the evening. Born in Kentuckey and raised in New Orleans, started painting around 1880, when she enrolled in the New Orleans Art Union. In 1895, she moved to New York where Turner studied at the Design School for Women at Cooper Union. She also to private lessons with William Merritt Chase.

Helen Marla Turner (Nov. 13, 1858 – Jan. 31, 1958); American painter and teacher, known for her work in oils, watercolors and pastels in which she created miniatures, landscapes, still lives and portraits, often in an Impressionist style.

Began painting at 22; her early works were portraits and bayou landscapes. Initially self-taught, she began taking free classes offered by Tulane University.... Turner traveled with Chase and his class to Italy in 1904, 1905, and 1911, but otherwise appears to have shown scant interest in studying abroad, unlike other American Impressionists....
