The Lion Laughs at the Marabout's Question

Henry Justice Ford

A puma guardian, a laughing lion, a jaguar besieged by peccaries, and a lion tamed by love – just some of the large Felid characters from The Red Book of Animal Stories selected by the Scottish folk-tale collector Andrew Lang with illustrations by the English artist and noted Lang collaborator Henry Justice Ford. This collection of stories was published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1899. The lion images are from the story “An Adventure of Gérard, the Lion Hunter,” while the jaguar and puma are from “Pumas and Jaguars in South America.” [http://senses-working-overtime.tumblr.com/post/171490411682/uwmspeccoll-more-big-cats-for-caturday-a-puma]
