I’m reminded of The Creation of the World and the Expulsion from Paradise, 1445 by Giovanni di Paolo a painting that has contemporary looking elements to today’s audience, as if Kenneth Noland slapped one of his bull’s-eyes on top of a Sienese painting from 1445. Af Klint’s works have been compared to Noland’s and in this instance the bands of color are brazenly painted to form an opaque rainbow ring, but the white paint that fills in the circle is atmospheric and deftly handled, bringing me back to the milky sky of the di Paolo painting.
