István ef Zámbó was born on the 3rd January 1950 in Salgótarján, a little town in northern Hungary and has lived in Szentendre since he was a child. In the course of the 20th century, Szentendre has developed into one of the most significant artistic centres of Hungary. In the 1930s, the Society of Painters of Szentendre was founded by Post-Impressionist painters. In the late forties, the artists of the European School, though they partly retained the Hungarian tradition, were open to European influence - Duncet, the French master, and Corneille, one of the dominant figures of the Cobra Group worked there at that time., In 1948, however, the European School was banned by the Communist autocracy, which regarded Socialist Realism as the model. Most of the artists were constrained to silence, their exhibitions were prohibited. The sixties and seventies are marked by the development of individual ways - Jenő Barcsay, Dezső Korniss, Endre Bálint, Deim Pál, etc.. In 1968, ef Zámbó (ef = 'effectual') encouraged four young amateur artists starting out on their careers to hang their works on the wall of the barbican in Szentendre. The same event then occurred every year on the first Sunday of October, attracting more and more visitors. These exhibitions, performances and events, which may be attributed practically to ingenuous gags and the antecedent Dada and Surrealism, seemed somewhat strange in those days and also attracted the attention of the local police force. Meanwhile, ef Zámbó was a manual worker in the German Democratic Republic, this being the only way for him to escape conscription. As a painter, graphic artist and sculptor, it is by all means the surrealist and Dadaist tradition that he takes up and follows. We must not forget that the bulk of the classic avant-garde movements of the early 20th century terminated relatively early.
