"I was in Visby to relax with my family, but also to try and get a sense of Ivan Agueli, a modernist painter who was deeply interested in esoteric currents (theosophy, Swedenborg), who returned to Visby many times to paint.... I am attempting to understand his Cezanne-like landscapes that are otherworldly, permeated with a light that seems to come from elsewhere. ...The mystery of the meaning (if indeed there is any) of the abstract discs and circles have an eeriness that also reminded me of the odd, displacing light in Agueli’s landscapes of Visby: a sense of otherworldliness. Given Agueli’s eclectic religious interests, and his strong critique of modern mass-culture and bourgeois society, no wonder he came to Gotland again and again to paint. It was (and still is) easy to feel there a different temporality, if not spirituality, palpable in the old streets and stones."
