Pollock created the organic forms and pooling, soft-edged blots on this sheet with a staining technique that he developed in 1951. He stacked several sheets of absorbent Japanese paper, applied ink to the top sheet, and then allowed it to seep through, forming the same but less distinct composition on each successive sheet.
