Michelangelo, 1540

Jacopino Del Conte

Many sites erroneously say this is a self portrait by Michelangelo. According to https://www.wga.hu/html_m/c/conte/michelan.html it is a portrait of him. Michelangelo, was portrayed here at the age of 65 by his relatively unknown compatriot Del Conte. [http://www.artsalonholland.nl/manierisme/jacopino-del-conte-portret-michelangelo] (Although no image is shown for this caption, I believe it refers to the image above. [sh]) This portrait shows the artist Michelangelo Buonarotti bust-length, facing three-quarters to the right, with his head turned slightly to the right. He is wearing a black coat with a collar. The painting is a feeble copy of an original portrait by Jacopino del Conte which probably no longer survives. A version of the portrait in the Uffizi, Florence, is inscribed with Michelangelo’s name; a second version bears the date 1534, which is likely to be that of the original.
