Jakob Nieweg, also called Jacob Nieweg (Hogebeintum, May 26 1877 - Amersfoort, August 4, 1955); Dutch minister who is best known as a painter. Nieweg was born in Hogebeintum in 1877 as son of a clergyman. After high school he studied theology. He received his doctorate in 1905 from the University of Groningen with a thesis titled Frederick William Robertson. During his studies he attended drawing classes in the evenings given by the Groningen art teacher Anna Prooijen. In 1899 in Groningen he came in contact with H. P. Bremmer. Bremmer as a teacher affected Nieweg's painting ideas and taught Nieweg love for the work of Vincent van Gogh. Nieweg was successively minister in Ter Apel, Winsum and Spankeren. In 1914 Nieweg resigned his duties as pastor to devote himself to art in Bloemendaal. In 1919 he moved to Amersfoort, where he lived in 1955 until his death. A street in Amersfoort is named after him. Nieweg was a member and founder of The Bridge, a board member of Amersfoort's Artists Society AKG and board member of Association of Free Artists. He was a teacher of Elisabeth Catharina Bergsma (1902-1975). Nieweg married Neine Geertruida van der Meulen on September 4 1904 in Drachten. Charley Toorop painted their portrait in 1927.
