The characteristics of the paintings by Jan Kootstra 1951 (autodidact)are a harmonious composition and the fascinating effects of light and shadow. The composition makes use of Jan's collection of old but also new objects, such as (Roman) glass, ceramics, (Chinese) bronze, sometimes supplemented with native and exotic fruits. When painting a still life he places his chosen objects and becomes fascinated and inspired by the play of light and shadow. Jan's work may be called contemporary realistic art. The tangibility of the objects on the paintings always amazes and pleasantly surprises the viewer.
