Johannes (Jan) Korthals (1916-1972); Amsterdam painter who worked in the Impressionist style.
Korthals' style was strongly influenced by his great role models, Breitner and MacKenzie. The latter was Korthals' uncle and played a stimulating role in his life.
Korthals' work includes many cityscapes, especially Amsterdam and Paris. He also worked a lot on commission illustrating calendars and other printed matter.

He sold his first paintings for fl. 2.50 to his sister Co. With this money Jan could buy new drawing and painting material. Already at 19 Jan became a member of the Amsterdam artists' association St. Lucas. Two years later, Jan received a subsidy from the Royal Association for Support for Youthful Artists. With this grant, Jan could pay for evening courses at the Arts and Crafts School. For 3 years he attended lessons with Hendricus IJkelenstam and the Flemish Jos Rovers.
Another important teacher and mentor was his uncle Rie...
