Jan Wittenberg was a student of Floris Arntzenius and of the Academy in The Hague. In the twenties and thirty he made finely painted, modest still lifes, children and animals, and a single landscape. His compositions consist of simple objects, often seen from above and placed against a blue-black or dirty-white background. In simplicity and effect, his work closely resembles that of Jan Mankes. Wittenberg also made a lot of charts and woodcuts. His painted oeuvre is very rare: the size of his work is estimated at about 300 paintings. Museums: Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Gemeenteemuseum Arnhem and The Hague Municipal Museum.
