Johannes (Johan) Dijkstra (Groningen, December 23, 1896 - there, February 21 1978); Dutch painter, graphic artist, glazier, artist and teacher. He is considered one of the most important Groninger artists of the 20th century.
Dijkstra was born in the city of Groningen, son of a painter Derk Dijkstra and decorator Elizabeth Bousema. He was educated at the Minerva Academy as a student of, among others, F. H. Bach and Dirk de Vries Lamb and earned an MO certificate in Drawing. He continued his studies at the national academy in Amsterdam, with Antoon Derkinderen and Rik Roland Holst.
....From 1930 Dijkstra chose another direction and devoted himself to the monumental arts. He created a mural in the Groningen city hall, and learned stained glass technique from German glass painters. His first major monumental task was making the commemorative windows in the Academy Building of the University. The windows depict two female heroines, the feminist Aletta Jacobs and Resistance member Anda Kerkhoven. The latter he painted several times, even after she was killed shortly before the liberation, by the Sicherheitsdienst.
Dijkstra made his windows to 1937 in the NEC factory, then he had his own glass studio in the old Clerckhues at the Prinsenhof. ... After the war, glass assignments followed, inter alia, Dordrecht, Coevorden and Utrecht. Abroad (Manchester and Malmö) he designed mosaics and he participated in group exhibitions at The Plough in New York, Oldenburg and the Venice Biennale.
For years Dijkstra was the art critic for the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden.
His last years were not the happiest. After the death of his wife Marie in 1969, he often roamed the streets. His creativity had apparently left him and he stopped producing. His art criticism became increasingly fierce, and he began losing friends. Dijkstra died at the age of 81 in his hometown of Groningen. He was buried at Essenveld cemetery.
