South African artist, Jono Dry,
was born on the 1st of July 1989 in Pretoria and raised in the beautiful seaside town of Hermanus, where he has lived, worked and exhibited for most of his young life.
Entirely self taught, his unique photo realistic-surrealist works are usually created on a large scale, using graphite on paper or board. His subject matter is collected from images that inspire him and objects he encounters in his daily experience. He works up to a month on one drawing, and the works are done in pencil. Only pencil!
Dry aims to push the boundaries of conventionality with his work and to broaden the viewer’s perception of the ordinary. His photo realistic representations of the unreal create a tension between appearance and reality. By subtly combining these two elements he challenges our perceptions of reality and encourages us to assess and evaluate our biases, values and various other beliefs.
Jono joined the Rossouw Modern in 2012. He currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa. undefined
