Karel Johannes van Veen, born and died in Rotterdam, August 23, 1898- April 15, 1988. He produced portraits, still lifes, circus and fairground scenes that combined Moorish subjects with European backgrounds, figurines and mannequins, and woodcuts. Best known for his 1966 official portrait of Queen Juliana. In 1973, he painted a portrait of the then 6-year-old prince Willem-Alexander, now king of the Netherlands. During World War II he was interned in a camp, and also his home in Veere (where apparently the painting of the Dutch girl was painted) was ransacked. Much of his early work was lost. Although he did not seek publicity, he was commissioned to paint portraits of prominent Dutch figures. I'd love to know how it came about that he painted this housemaid. There is very little about him to find on the Internet, and all of it seems to be in Dutch. undefined
