Karen Kilimnik is a contemporary American artist subverting the traditions of painting and installation to investigate contemporary notions of celebrity and obsession. Her small-scale paintings are both sophisticated and slap dash, deliberately evoking the efforts of an amateur painter depicting their favorite movie star, copying a postcard of a resort, or attempting the techniques of an Old Master. In one of her most iconic works, Marie Antoinette Out For A Walk At Her Petite Hermitage, France 1750 (2005), she represents the famous French queen as Paris Hilton rendered in loose, confident brushstrokes. Kilimnik’s installation work employs a similarly irreverent and studied mixture of imagery, influenced by the “Scatter Art” movement of which was a part. In her installations, the artist presents a pastiche of aesthetic modes drawn from pop culture, fairy tales, and mystery novels as seen through the eyes of a both a critic and an awe-inspired fan.
Born in 1955 in Philadelphia, PA, Kilimnik attended Temple University and mounted her first solo show in 1991 at 303 Gallery in NY. Today, her works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in NY, and the Hammer Museum in LA, among others. Kilimnik lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.

The work exemplified the “scatter” style of her installations.
...Her work is variously described as "sharp and witty...
