Karin Szekessy, born in Essen in 1938, is one of the leading photo artists in Germany.
She is known in the art scene for her magical photographs as well as for the collaboration with her deceased husband, the painter, draftsman, graphic designer and sculptor Paul Wunderlich, who designed many of his works based on their photos. In addition to the portraits, landscapes and still lifes, Karin Székessy’s nude photographs have made her famous internationally and are now classics of nude photography in all major collections.
Karin Székessy is one of the most important European photographers since the 1960s.
During this time she devoted herself to the art of nude photography. Her pictures embody aesthetics, grace and are poetically staged. Her works thematize the transience of beauty. Working closely with her husband, graphic artist and sculptor Paul Wunderlich, she managed to develop her distinctive photographic style, inspired by her photo opportunities in many of his works. Both oeuvre – also because of their perfection – always walked a bit on the fine line between erotic underworld fantasy and luxurious kitsch. And yet, above all, they stand for a concept of sophisticated cosmopolitan elegance in the Federal Republic of the art world of the 60s and 70s, whose stars included the photographer and the painter. In addition, Karin Székessy also recorded numerous artist portraits, photographed articles for renowned magazines and hundreds of book covers.
Between 1960-66, the trained photographer worked as a reportage photographer and then taught fashion photography at a school of applied arts.
... her landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and files capture her calm, quiet melancholy, indulgence and sometimes even delicate brittleness, which seduce with her play of light and shadow and her idiosyncratic atmosphere to dream.
