Kees Verwey made his name in the 20th century as a painter, watercolorist and draftsman. He was known for his stubborn contrary personalty.
Verwey was born in Haarlem, into a family of painters, poets and architects, and is regarded as a true representative of the school of the classics, but with its own twist. His themes include color and shape, flowers and decay, women, objects and material, all painted in his studio on the Spaarne under constantly changing light and atmosphere.
Verwey lived to be 95 years old and thus his work spans nearly a century, which gives an extra dimension to his work. His boisterous, sometimes irascible temperamental personality and his refusal to bow to trends or movements, give his work a completely unique character. It's obvious that Verwey rose to his full glory in his portraits of women, his studio pieces and flower watercolors in ever-changing colors and compositions. undefined
