Costume design for Nijinsky as Chinese Dancer in Les Orientales, 1917

Leon Bakst

Russians Vaslav Nijinsky (1889/1890-1950) and Leon Bakst (1866-1924) both were creative forces behind the Ballet Russes which revolutionized dance and performing arts in pre-World War I Europe. Nijinsky was the star of productions such as The Rite of Spring and Afternoon of a Faun, works that often shocked critics and audiences. Bakst designed the colorful sets and costumes, with Nijinsky serving as his primary model. (http://artseverydayliving.com/blog/page/12/)
