Leonid Isaacovich Frechkop (Леонид Исаакович Фрешкоп); Russian painter born on Nov. 6, 1897 in Moscow, died on Nov. 10, 1982 in Brussels.
Born in Malaya Dmitrovka in Moscow, his parents were Isaac Abramovich Frechkop (born in Simferopol, 1864) and his wife born Eugenia Akimovna Kalmykova (born in Novocherkassk, 1874). He is the younger brother of the Belgian cryptozoologist Serge Isaacovich Frechkop.
Student of the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of Moscow and the Russian Academy of Fine Arts between 1916-20, with Constantin Korovin, Abram Arkhipov and Nikolai Kassatkin as masters. Frechkop left USSR via Riga, arrived in France in 1921, then in Belgium in 1922, to settle there definitively, beginning there as painter-decorator and contributing to the realization in 1923, for the Royal Theater of Antwerp, decors of operas The Golden Cock of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Eugene Onegin of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He befriended the original Argentinean theater designer, Jules Payró, who has an artistic and intellectual background (one finds the writer Paul-Aloïse De Bock and the surrealist painter Paul Delvaux). In 1925, Leonid Frechkop married Joséphine Edward, a pianist, by which he was the brother-in-law of the Belgian painter Marcel Canneel.
In 1935, Frechkop spent a year in Argentina (closely involved in Argentine artistic and intellectual circles, with a personal exhibition dedicated to him in 1936) and to Venezuela. We know from his work that his resorts in France lead him to Savoy, Provence or Corsica. In 1968, his trip to Turkey inspired mainly a series of works on the theme of the Taurus Mountains.
Also a translator of the poetry of Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov and Apollo Maykov, art critic by the articles he devotes to the Belgian art of his time, Leonid Frechkop is seen by Laurence Brogniez as a Belgian painters whose writing exceeded his art.
