Liang Weiyuan (梁伟员) was born in 1985 in Chongqing, China, and in 2004 studied in the Department of Chinese Painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing. His works on canvas or silk combine a bold use of color with a delicate layering of wavering, twisting lines. Referencing the repetitive and meditative practice of Buddhist art, and the artistic/linguistic aspects of calligraphy, Liang's work displays a philosophical awareness of traditional Chinese culture. His compositions are visual expressions of calm uncertainty, orderly and structured, sometimes hinting at the presence of an organizing grid, but thoughtful in a meandering manner. Liang draws inspiration from the Dunhuang Caves and the rich visual imagery of their frescoes, as well as traditional Chinese calligraphy, the expressiveness of its brushstrokes, and the symbolic power of language in culture. Bold blues, reds, and yellows create visual tension and movement with lines that twist and contort across the canvas, mimicking expressive calligraphy but stripped of literal meaning.
