Mabel Layng was born in 1881, in Grammar School House, Macclesfield, Cheshire. Her family moved to Stafford a few years later. She was the daughter of Alfred Edward Freestone Layng (1851-1921), who was the Headmaster of King Edward VI School between 1883 - 1901, and his wife Ada Mary Coates (1853-1883).
After 1902, the family moved away from Stafford; and by 1914, they had settled in Ealing, London, where Mabel remained for the rest of her life.
Her paintings show scenes of everyday life in London during the years between the First World War & 1930. She exhibited at the Royal Academy & other galleries between 1916-1928. She follows women as they shop, visit the milliner, sew, meet at the cafe, dance, make music, and, of course, take tea together. undefined
