Madeline Green was born in Paddington, London in 1884, but spent most of her life in Ealing, West London, where she acquired a studio close to her family home. She studied at the Royal Academy of Arts Schools between July 1906 and July 1911, on two occasions being awarded medals for her work.
In 1915 Madeline Green had one of her paintings The Model hung at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, which attracted effusive praise from The Times’ art critic, concluding, “It is a credit to the Academy that the painting should be so well hung.” She continued to exhibit at the RA Summer Exhibition regularly throughout her life. Green was also a regular exhibitor at the annual show of the Society of Women Artists, again receiving positive accolades for her work. Later in her career she exhibited at the Paris Salons, receiving praise from the French art critics. The Chenille Net, which has since been acquired by the Dulwich Picture Gallery, was exhibited both at the Royal Academy and the Glasgow Institute, winning a Gold Medal when it was shown at the Paris Salon in 1947. The painting of The Twins was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1933. In 1927, the highly renowned and respected art dealer Sir Joseph Duveen purchased her painting The Future on behalf of the Manchester Art Gallery.
Madeline Green’s paintings show the influence of the French Impressionists and the Glasgow Boys, a group of artists and designers working in Glasgow between 1890 and 1910. Her subtle palette and indisputable technical skill is combined with a restless and vital energy in her brushwork. This combination conveys a mysterious and disquieting quality to Green’s interiors and portraits, or equally a lively sense of movement and expression found in her equestrian paintings and studies of dancers, demonstrating her great virtuosity as an artist.
