Artwork Title: Makaava kissa, Mosse (Recumbent Cat, Mosse)

Makaava kissa, Mosse (Recumbent Cat, Mosse), 1872-1873

Maria Wiik

I'm guessing someone used Google Translate to translate the Finnish title. Google Translate renders "Makaava kissa" as "creeping cat," which obviously makes no sense as the cat is not creeping at all, but sleeping. However, Google Translate also gives the further options of "lying," "prone" and "recumbent." To me, "recumbent" seems the most appropriate choice, as you cannot really say the cat is lying face down (prone), and "lying" can be understood in more than one way. I am therefore officially declaring the English title of this painting to be "Recumbent Cat" (also rolls better off the tongue), until or unless a native Finnish-speaking person can provide a better translation.
