Artwork Title: Before the Ball

Before the Ball, 1886

Marie Wandscheer

"...Dressed for the evening, our subject observes herself in the mirror, giving herself a final once over before making her way out. Her expression captures the intelligence and humility of a young person inspecting her appearance, measuring against her own expectations of beauty. Does she seem satisfied with herself, or has she fallen short? My “Ball” selections for March 2018 have featured a many of different subjects looking at themselves in mirrors, but I realize only a few of these works have shown those reflections glazing back. Wandscheer’s reflection of this young woman could operate as a proper portrait, capturing her vulnerability during this private act of self-examination. Wandscheer supplies some wonderful details throughout this scene. I love the ornamental designs of the mirror panel and the chair. Her rendering of the fabric bundled upon the console is also very nice." [https://againstathorn.livejournal.com/652115.html]
