Clement "Ment" Nelson creates illustrations of the rural Lowcountry of South Carolina, and the people who make their lives there, with an unusual degree of warmth and familiarity. Nelson himself lives in Varnville, about an hour and a half outside Charleston. Ment's namesake is the late pastor and state senator Clementa Pinckney, who was one of the Emanuel Nine who were killed in a church by a shooter in their Charleston church in the middle of a Bible study.
Nelson uses pen and ink to create his illustrations, then colors them digitally. Also a member of the hip-hop group OXYxMORON, he is almost completely self-taught, though his formal training is in graphic design, which he studied for two years at Francis Marion College. undefined
