Q. Which images from early American history inform how you depict these representations? A. One of the mezzotint engravings that served as source material for many early American portraits of women was a print by Isaac Beckett of Princess Ann. Colonial American artists such as John Singleton Copley used it, as did John Greenwood. Here, in the painting within the painting, I’ve represented John Greenwood’s version which is in the National Gallery in DC. My painting is titled Close Quote.
