Born in 1961, Yungyang, Korea, Nam Tchun-Mo lives and works in Daegu, Korea and Cologne, Germany. His MFA is from the School of Fine Arts, Keimyung University, Daegu, Korea.
Through repetition of simple lines and a mixture of oriental natural colors Nam Tchun-Mo creates works beyond the boundaries of sculpture and painting. Dynamic and rhythmic lines built on the surface of the canvas create harmony between light and shadow areas. His paintings are sculptural pieces where the lines are infinite space.
Color and light are key ingredients of his art. He is constantly plays on them, exploiting the most varied resources of the chromatic spectrum, while not neglecting the subtle modulations of black and white.
Nam Chun-Mo represents the new generation of Korean monochrome movement Dansaekhwa. Recently, he won the 1st prize of the foundation Hachonghyn rewarding a great master of the movement Dansaekhwa.

“In my works, I intend to show fragrance simmering like a haze that personally blooms from my heart. A certain aroma that is beyond distinct materiality seems to be manifested to a dash of color that emerges from somewhere beyond something transparent. I paste clear synthetic resins onto soft fabric and bind them together. Then I make U-shaped structures and glue them on the canvas in a specific arrangment, and cover the surface with acrylics. In other words, I create a space on top of the two-dimensional canvas, endow the space with meaning, and lastly enjoy all the accidents made by light and shadow within the space. Lines in a drawing, basically, compose a memory of lines; I want to observe how those lines in a drawing evolve into the space. At the same time, I intend to explore how I can, on the contrary, reach the subconscious of the art starting from a space, and personally, how to transform the ‘hazy fragrance‘ into the plastic element.”
