This drawing by Odilon Redon was re-used as a lithograph to decorate the cover of a collection of stories by Edgar Allan Poe translated into French by Émile Hennequin. Intensely black and almost schematic in design, the large bird perched on the sill of an open window has an equivalent, if not its source, in the illustration for a frontispiece engraved by Linley Sambourne for "The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe", published in London in 1881.
