THE BUILDINGS
Until May 1997 all Peter’s paintings were about buildings: – old shops, barns, doorways, windows, reflections etc. firstly in the UK and then in the explosion of French subjects from 1985. Now with a small studio at Petit Mas Peter was able to work in France and begin extensive travels mainly in the Southern region of the country and eventually to Morocco, Spain and Portugal and especially Venice. All very exciting and all very successful.
THE HARBOUR SERIES
While in Essaouira on the Atlantic coast of Morocco in 1996, Peter took photographs of details of the old fishing boats in the busy harbour and boatyards. After close inspection of the photos on return to the Dordogne, Peter decided on a change of direction – in came vibrant paintings of the old boats, their wonderful distressed timbers, the ropes, the rust – all the sun and salt ravaged surfaces in a harbour environment.
THE COLLECTIONS SERIES
Peter has amassed a collection of found objects from the shoreline – pebbles, shells, broken pottery, sea glass, rusty cans, driftwood etc – and from elsewhere, disposable lighters, old paint brushes, snail shells, bottles, conkers, old Dinky cars, skulls and discarded rusty metal objects.
In the Collections Series these objects have been painted laid out in grid formations on white backgrounds giving a contemporary or even stark overall image. Over time these grids soften into a more conventional still life format.
THE STILL LIFES
From around 2006 until the present, Peter has developed a diverse range of still life paintings with subjects ranging from rusty beer cans and old nails to old bottles and glasses, bowls of cherries and strawberries.
ODDS AND ENDS
These series of paintings have often overlapped and in between Peter has painted landscapes, old torn posters, folded fabrics, pebbles and rocks and made a number of collages.
