Artwork Title: Veiled Lady

Veiled Lady, ca. 1860

Raffaele Monti

Monti’s carving of this piece of stone with such delicate detail is hard to comprehend. The smoothed treatment of the marble on flowers and skin in contrast to the slightly rough or matte texture of the veil give the carving a soft realistic yet demure quality.... The lady’s features seem to gently push against the veil. Her gaze is cast down depicting the chaste young virgin she is meant to portray, yet the veil she wears also resembles a death shroud.
