Randy Hryhorczuk is a contemporary Canadian visual artist born in Vancouver, British Columbia, 1974.
Randy grew up in the wild, rural countryside of British Columbia’s lower mainland. As an adult he lived in city of Vancouver before moving to Toronto, Ontario in pursuit of oil painting. He devoting himself to painting full time in late 2006, after working in the design field, digging holes and clearing paths. In 2007, Randy relocated to Guatemala City, Guatemala with his wife. This period was spent drawing, painting, reading, visiting museums and traveling throughout Central America; frequently returning to Canada for art exhibitions and deliveries. During this time, an alarmingly long list of ideas was developed. Some were executed, and continued into bodies of work evolving over several years.
Although the primary focus of Randy’s early art work had been figure painting, his interest in modern design and minimalism lead him to explore abstraction. His earliest abstract paintings were architectural deconstructions. In 2003 he started a lengthy series of minimalist landscape paintings that continues to evolve. In concert with this, a series of figurative paintings and portraits depicting bird/human hybrids was developed, drawing heavily on elements of myth and psychology. In 2007, inspired by the dense city of Guatemala, his interested returned to architecture, producing a body of urban landscape paintings depicting billboard structures. Simple messages replaced advertising with messages of encouragement, hope, and sociopolitical commentaries. Life in Guatemala was punctuated with frequent air travel. Long hours spent alone in airports inspired an airplane painting series, in which clusters of passenger airliners flew at low altitudes, close to the surface of the earth. In 2011, Randy began work on a new group of paintings in which satellites are the objects of our collective affections....
