This work is also sometimes called the "Madonna of the Meadow" and is officially named "Madonna with the Christ Child and Saint John the Baptist," as well as being termed the "Madonna del Belvedere" because of its long stay in the imperial collection in the Vienna Belvedere. It depicts the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus, and an infant John the Baptist in a calm, grassy meadow. Each of the three figures is linked through their looks at one another, forming a triangle; another triangle is formed by Mary's figure, completed by her outstretched leg along a diagonal. The blue of her dress symbolizes the Church, and the red Christ's sacrifice. The contact of Mary and Jesus' hands signifies the uniting of the Church (a maternal entity) with Christ.
