Robert Gillmor started his long career as an illustrator at the age of 15, with drawings for the monthly magazine British Birds. He illustrated the first of over 150 books in 1958 while an art student at Reading University. He was a founder member and later President of the Society of Wildlife Artists. In 1966 he was appointed Art Editor of the 9 volume Birds of the Western Palearctic. After moving to North Norfolk in 1998 he concentrated on printmaking and designing book jackets, including the Collins New Naturalist series. In 2010/11 he designed 42 stamps for the Royal Mail's Post and Go service. (http://www.eastanglianartists.com/robert-gillmor.php)
Robert is a watercolourist of the calibre of Charles Tunnicliffe, whose work he greatly admired. The Gillmor watercolour style has been imitated by several artists. Fewer have, however, tried to replicate his linocutting style, perhaps partly owing to this being an even more difficult process than painting in watercolour. It is in his print making that Robert brings together his mastery of wildlife art and the thousands of hours he has spent observing birds and other animals. Indeed, he began his long career as an illustrator at the age of 15 – after being introduced to linocutting at school – with drawings for the monthly journal, British Birds. He illustrated the first of over 150 books in 1958 while an art student at Reading University.... After moving to North Norfolk in 1998, he concentrated on print-making and designing book jackets, including the prestigious Collins New Naturalist series. Robert’s book, Cutting Away, was published in 2006 and is an essential read for anyone interested in taking up the exacting practice of linocut printing as well as representing a fascinating insight to those of us who just want to marvel at the way he can depict complex, many-coloured animals using just a handful of flat colours.
